CHAPTER 4.

The next day

I reached school.

The same boring routine started all over again—classes, lectures, notebooks, Notes, Tests, homework, and the same nothing exciting just never-ending chaos of my classroom.

Some students were running from one bench to another. A group of girls had already started discussing yesterday's TV serial as if they were professional critics. A few boys were playing "paper football" using a crushed notebook page. Someone had hidden another student's pencil box.

Typical.

The first Six periods somehow passed peacefully.

Then came the free period.

The moment our subject teacher left the classroom...

It felt like someone had opened the gates of a zoo.

Everyone started shouting.

Some were singing.

Some were dancing.

Some were throwing paper balls.

Some were laughing so loudly that even the next classroom could probably hear us.

And then...

There was me.

The unlucky class monitor.

Being the class monitor, it was my responsibility to make everyone sit quietly.

Unfortunately... no one ever listened to me.

Not that I wanted them to stay quiet either.

Honestly, our class teacher had forcefully made me the class monitor.

I never wanted this responsibility.

Who wants to control sixty hyperactive teenagers?

I stood up from my seat and clapped loudly.

"Guys... please sit down."

No response.

I tried again.

"Come on, everyone. Be quiet."

Still nothing.

It was as if I didn't even exist.

I folded my arms and took a deep breath.

I still tried my best to control everyone, but my efforts had absolutely no effect.

"PLEASE, SHUT UP, YOU ALL!"

I shouted at the top of my lungs.

No one cared.

Amazing.

Absolutely amazing.

At that moment, I seriously wondered if invisible people had an easier life than class monitors.

Everyone was busy in their own little world. One corner of the class looked like a family meeting.

The other looked like a vegetable market. Some were gossiping as if tomorrow the world was going to end, while others were still eating their lunch.

Seriously?

The lunch break had ended two periods ago. I wondered if they had slept through the entire interval.

And the cherry on top...

Ayush and Shlok.

My daily headache.

"Mihika!"

Those two kept eating my brain like termites.

"Mihika, how do you study so much?"

"How do you manage everything?"

"You're so talented at painting!"

"Can you help me complete my work?"

"Can you help me complete my practical file?"

"Can you explain today's Chemistry chapter?"

"Can I copy your homework?"

Questions.

Questions.

And more questions.

I simply smiled.

But inside my head...

If you both were my real brothers, I'd teach you a very good lesson.

They weren't my brothers by blood, but they still felt like family—always chaotic, always annoying... yet somehow cute.

Yet...

If they were absent even for one day, the classroom felt strangely quiet.

Finally, I lost my patience.

I slammed my notebook on the desk.

"If even one of you says another word, I'll make sure your names are submitted to the Principal Ma'am."

A few students immediately became quiet.

But not everyone.

Someone laughed.

My anger had reached its peak.

That was enough.

I picked up my notebook, walked straight out of the classroom, and closed the door behind me.

Suddenly...

Silence.

Pure silence.

I almost laughed.

Wow.

So they can stay quiet.

I wasn't actually going to complain to the Principal. I hated seeing my classmates get punished.

Yes, they irritated me.

Yes, they never listened.

But they were still my classmates.

Punishing them would only make everyone upset.

Instead of going towards the Principal's office, I walked to the corridor where the school nannies usually sat.

Those aunties were honestly some of the sweetest people in the entire school.

No matter who passed by...

They always smiled.

Always asked whether we had eaten.

Always treated us like their own children.

As I reached them, I smiled.

"Good morning, Aunty," I greeted one of them.

She smiled warmly.

"Good morning, beta. What happened? Why are you sitting here?"

I sighed and explained everything—the shouting, the noise, and how nobody ever listened to me.

How I had practically begged them to stay quiet.

She listened patiently.

Then, She laughed sarcastically.

"She sit here for some time. Don't go back. Let them worry about where you've gone."

I blinked.

That...

Actually sounded like a brilliant idea.

So I stayed.

So I did.

For the next ten minutes, I sat there chatting with her.

We talked about random things.

She asked me about my studies.

I asked about her family.

She even offered me a biscuit from her lunch box.

Time passed surprisingly fast.

Then...

The school bell rang.

I stood up.

"Thank you, Aunty."

She smiled.

"Now go and see your naughty class."

I laughed before walking back.

The moment I entered the classroom...

Every single head turned towards me.

Literally everyone.

The room was so quiet that I could hear the ceiling fan.

For a second...

They looked at me as if I had become a ghost.

"What happened? Where were you?" Priyansu asked. He was the boys' monitor.

I tried hard not to laugh.

"Ma'am is coming," I lied with a straight face. "She said if anyone talks again, she'll come herself."

Within seconds...

The entire class became pin-drop silent.

Silence.

Instant.

No arguments.

No whispers.

No jokes.

Everyone quietly opened their notebooks.

Some even pretended to study.

I almost burst out laughing.

One tiny lie...

One magical lie...

And the loudest class in the school had suddenly transformed into the most disciplined one.

For the rest of the day, nobody created any trouble.

I completed my attendance.

Collected notebooks.

Finished every duty a class monitor was supposed to do.

And as the final bell rang, I couldn't help but smile.

Maybe...

Being a class monitor wasn't completely impossible after all.

You just needed the right trick.

And sometimes...

A harmless little lie could save an entire classroom.
